Conceptual outcome diagram. A retrieval or embryo finding does not by itself establish a live-birth benefit. The reviewed interventions were growth hormone, not sermorelin.

## What to know

- Randomized IVF trials give mixed results with different patients and endpoints. They do not establish sermorelin as a fertility treatment.

- The study population, intervention and chosen outcome set the limits of the finding.

- A biological signal does not establish a broad wellness benefit.

## The question begins with the outcome that matters

Growth hormone has been studied as an addition to ovarian stimulation during assisted reproduction. The important consumer question is whether it increases the chance of a live birth, rather than simply changing a hormone measurement, the number of eggs retrieved or an embryo grade. The randomized studies do not provide one consistent, broadly transferable answer. [\[1\]](https://sermorelinnerd.com/research/growth-hormone-ivf-live-birth/#reference-1) [\[2\]](https://sermorelinnerd.com/research/growth-hormone-ivf-live-birth/#reference-2) [\[3\]](https://sermorelinnerd.com/research/growth-hormone-ivf-live-birth/#reference-3)

This is a specialist fertility discussion. It is especially important to preserve the difference between the recombinant growth hormone used in these studies and a commercial sermorelin prescription. Sharing part of an endocrine pathway does not make the products interchangeable. A person considering an IVF add-on needs an explanation tied to their fertility treatment and evidence, rather than a general promise of hormone optimization or ovarian rejuvenation.

## LIGHT put live birth at the center

The 2019 LIGHT trial compared growth hormone with placebo in women with a documented poor response to a previous IVF stimulation cycle. It was randomized and double-blind, and live birth was the primary outcome. The reported rates were 9 of 62 with growth hormone and 7 of 51 with placebo: 14.5% and 13.7%. The study did not reach its planned participant numbers. [\[1\]](https://sermorelinnerd.com/research/growth-hormone-ivf-live-birth/#reference-1)

Those details support a careful conclusion. The trial did not demonstrate a live-birth advantage, but its recruitment limitation also reduces confidence about the size of any possible effect. It would be too strong to say the comparison proves that benefit is impossible in every setting. It would be equally misleading to call the result successful because one intermediate measure looked more favorable. The prespecified primary question remains the appropriate place to start.

## Retrieving an egg is one step along the pathway

LIGHT reported greater odds of oocyte retrieval with growth hormone, without a demonstrated improvement in embryo transfer or live birth. [\[1\]](https://sermorelinnerd.com/research/growth-hormone-ivf-live-birth/#reference-1) That contrast is a useful lesson in reading fertility claims. The pathway includes several steps, and improving the chance of reaching an earlier step does not automatically establish improvement at the final one.

Ask what denominator a quoted percentage uses. A result per retrieval, per transfer or per woman starting treatment can describe different experiences. A percentage calculated only among people who reached a later stage leaves out those who did not get there. This does not make the laboratory endpoint unimportant. It means the endpoint should retain its own name and limits, rather than being relabeled as an increase in the chance of taking home a baby.

## An older positive trial should remain visible

Tesarik and colleagues randomized 100 women over 40 to growth hormone or placebo during assisted reproduction. The investigators reported similar numbers of oocytes, embryos and pregnancies, but fewer pregnancy losses and higher delivery and live-birth results in the growth-hormone group. [\[2\]](https://sermorelinnerd.com/research/growth-hormone-ivf-live-birth/#reference-2) That is a positive finding and should not disappear from an account focused on uncertainty.

It also does not cancel LIGHT by simple vote. The studies enrolled different populations, used their own protocols and reported outcomes within those designs. A favorable study in women over 40 is not a result for every younger poor responder, and an unfavorable comparison in another group is not a direct replication of every earlier regimen. The appropriate task is to understand those differences before asking how much confidence the combined picture supports. One paper alone should not carry a universal recommendation.

## A newer embryo-quality study asked another question

A 2025 randomized open-label study included 128 women with previous poor embryonic development. Its primary endpoint was the number of high-quality embryos on day three. There was no statistically significant overall increase in that primary measure. Gonadotropin requirements and stimulation duration were lower, while a lower-baseline-IGF-1 subgroup produced an exploratory signal. [\[3\]](https://sermorelinnerd.com/research/growth-hormone-ivf-live-birth/#reference-3)

The authors discussed a possible role for personalized treatment. A reader should keep the overall result alongside that possibility. An encouraging subgroup cannot establish a rule that everyone below a particular IGF-1 value should receive growth hormone. It needs confirmation in an appropriately designed comparison. The open-label design and different enrollment criteria also matter when comparing this study with a placebo-controlled trial organized around live birth. Similar biological language can conceal substantially different experiments.

## An IGF-1 result is not a fertility prescription

The newer trial examined baseline IGF-1 in relation to response. [\[3\]](https://sermorelinnerd.com/research/growth-hormone-ivf-live-birth/#reference-3) That does not validate a consumer test as a stand-alone way to choose an IVF add-on or a peptide program. Before acting on a subgroup claim, ask whether its cutoff was specified in advance, how many participants supported it and whether another study reproduced the finding.

The more attractive a proposed selection rule appears, the more valuable that independent confirmation becomes. Otherwise a measurement can turn into a reason to buy treatment without evidence that using it improves the decision. A fertility specialist should interpret the report within the person’s treatment history and explain what uncertainty remains. A number should inform a conversation rather than substitute for one, particularly when the intervention adds expense and another medication to a demanding process.

## The medicine and the treatment setting must travel with the result

These three trials administered growth hormone as an adjunct within assisted-reproduction protocols. They did not test commercial sermorelin programs for fertility. [\[1\]](https://sermorelinnerd.com/research/growth-hormone-ivf-live-birth/#reference-1) [\[2\]](https://sermorelinnerd.com/research/growth-hormone-ivf-live-birth/#reference-2) [\[3\]](https://sermorelinnerd.com/research/growth-hormone-ivf-live-birth/#reference-3) Their results cannot be transferred merely by describing both interventions as supporting the GH pathway. The actual medicine, timing, patient selection and concurrent treatment are part of what was tested.

This also limits an anti-aging interpretation. A fertility study is not a demonstration that raising GH reverses ovarian aging throughout the general population. Ask for the specific study behind a proposed benefit and whether it used the same preparation for a comparable clinical problem. If the evidence belongs to another intervention, that distance should remain explicit in the decision. A shared mechanism is a starting point for research, not a substitute for the missing trial.

## A useful consultation makes the tradeoff explicit

For someone undergoing IVF, the next conversation should identify the hoped-for outcome, the size and uncertainty of any expected improvement, additional medication costs, monitoring and alternatives. A service should distinguish routine stimulation medicines from an optional adjunct and explain why that adjunct is being proposed for this treatment history.

The evidence here supports a measured conclusion: growth hormone remains an uncertain IVF add-on across these differing trial settings, and a change in egg or embryo measures should not be presented as an established live-birth gain. [\[1\]](https://sermorelinnerd.com/research/growth-hormone-ivf-live-birth/#reference-1) [\[2\]](https://sermorelinnerd.com/research/growth-hormone-ivf-live-birth/#reference-2) [\[3\]](https://sermorelinnerd.com/research/growth-hormone-ivf-live-birth/#reference-3) Neither the positive older study nor the neutral primary results should be hidden. The most useful explanation allows a patient to understand both, while keeping sermorelin claims outside the boundary of what these trials actually tested.
